Introducing the event curator, Tom Ramwell
Tom enjoys taking photos of his travels and enjoys the meditative aspect of photography, be that up a local mountain, shooting a local river scene, or on a cycle tour in the alps. He enjoys the post-production aspect too and learning about different effects or techniques, and wishes to share his knowledge and also enjoys learning from the experts. He is here to host the evening and welcomes guest speakers who wish to chat about what they enjoy and for them to showcase their work, who knows where it could lead?

Let's have a bit of craic and learn a few things along the way!

The aim is to get together, informally, and learn more about photography we can organise day trips out to different locations, in a laid-back way with each participant being able to learn new techniques and enjoy the company of fellow photographers.

I will curate the event but it will be great to have different people host the event and invite other photographers, filmmakers and documentary makers to get involved, we can organise day trips out and enjoy learning together!
The purpose of Westport Light Collective is to:
  • Gather together like minded people
    Westport and the west of Ireland present so many varied and beautiful scenes for photographers to capture, and there is certainly no shortage of people interested in photography around here, Tom is opening up his café bar to all people interested in photography to come and share knowledge, tips and even organise some days out shooting in beautiful locations.
  • Learn and/or revisit the basics of photography
    Practice taking photos to learn how to use the camera, and learn new skills and techniques by sharing with each other. Let's get together to pool knowledge about local spots and help each other out when it comes to our craft. Maybe we can organise some group photo assignments too.
  • Car Pool and save money visiting different locations
    We can organise days out and share the cost of fuel, this is less damaging to the planet and means we can have a bit of craic too, share knowledge (and equipment, such as tripods, filters and get to see how different brands perform too).
  • Organise some charity exhibitions of our work
    We could link in with Westival or other art initiatives and even look at funding to raise awareness of certain issues (as decided upon during the group meetings), and organise our own exhibitions, I've loads of ideas and I would LOVE to hear yours too! let's create positive change together!
  • Learn new skills in shooting, digital darkroom and printing
    We can pool knowledge of different software programs and aim to lift up each other's work, we can look at film, different camera brands, equipment and all sorts, the world is our oyster! Let's get together and enjoy some time in the like-minded company of fellow camera clickers!
Registration
What will we get from these sessions?
Each month The Gallery will showcase a different theme that we have covered and display the photos in the café for people to buy. Every year, e.g. linking in with the arts festival, we will host a large format exhibition to celebrate Westport photographers and the local area in general. The aim of which is to raise awareness of cultural, social and/or environmental issues of our time.
